What Are Microgreens?

Microgreens are the earliest stage of a vegetable plant’s development, after the sprouting stage. They are “living foods” – purposefully utilized in their most nutritious and delicious state.
In the photo below, you can see sprouts on the left, microgreens in the middle, and a more mature vegetable plant on the right:

Microgreens are harvested just after the seed leaves begin to form, about 7-21 days after germination. In fact, microgreens can basically be grown from any kind of vegetable or herb—giving way to many different types and flavors. At Microgreenious, we offer a variety of microgreens, including broccoli sprouts, sunflower sprouts, sunflower shoots, radish microgreens, pea shoots, and more.

Often called “sprouts,” these mighty greens are actually harvested slightly later than sprouts but are also smaller than “baby greens.” However, microgreens are well-know for their nutritious contents, which is why you’ll hear plenty of people also refer to microgreens as superfoods.

These incredibly nutritious plants come with a variety of health benefits. Microgreens can help support the immune system, promote longevity, slow down age-related effects, and even potentially reduce the risk of cancer via their high antioxidant content.

Adding Microgreens to Your Diet

It’s not all about the nutrients. Microgreens can add aesthetics, flavor, and texture to a variety of foods. Depending on the type of microgreens, these superfoods can amp up the spice or sweetness of almost any dish. For example, radish microgreens taste almost exactly like spicy radish but don’t overwhelm or overpower other flavors. Broccoli sprouts further taste almost identical to broccoli but don’t require any chopping for a quick snack.

Microgreens are also ultra-easy to add to your regular meals and can fill any nutritional gaps in your daily diet. You may choose to throw them into salads (you can even make a microgreen salad with only microgreens!), smoothies, soups, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, and more! In fact, many individuals choose to use microgreens as a type of greens supplement, simply eating them as they are as a type of insurance policy for obtaining a variety of nutrients and antioxidants.
